The Phoenix 50 Bands 50 States

July 3rd, 2008

We just got featured by the Phoenix up in the Boston / Providence area as the “best new act” in the state of Maryland.  We got stacked up there with “best all time act” The Orioles and “best all time solo-artist” John FaheyCheck it out here.   Thanks Phoenix!

Our tour with Pontiak ended with a bang at the Knitting Factory in New York.  For anyone who’s interested, Jennings from Pontiak kept a tour journal on the Thrill Jockey Records website, complete with pictures and special reflections.  See it here.

A couple of missed shows . . .

June 18th, 2008

Sorry to anyone who was looking forward to seeing us or Pontiak in either Iowa City, IA or last night in Norman, OK.  Both of those shows didn’t work out for completely different reasons.  We were thwarted in Iowa by floodwaters which blocked our way into town.  Then yesterday, on our way to Norman, our van began to violently shake and we were forced to take a 3 hour detour to have a bearing replaced on one of it’s front wheels.  That coupled with the 8 hour drive forced us to miss the show.  We’re all sad that the shows didn’t work out, but we can only promise that we’ll do our best to be back through both of those towns before the summer is out.

On the upside, the van is running smoothly and we shouldn’t be missing any other shows for the rest of the tour.  Also on the upside, during our mad detours, we made enough money on scratch-off lottery tickets to purchase a bottle of Smirnoff (see picture).

Another highlight was meeting the sweetest dog in the world at a cafe in St. Louis.  Please note the resemblance to Falkor from the Neverending Story.

update, tour, etc.

June 11th, 2008

How are you? It’s been too long.

We’re on the road with the burly Pontiak brothers. After camping in the wilderness of the Adirondacks, I think we’re digressing to our more animal impulses (see picture).

Our shows page is in a state of disrepair currently, but e are taking steps to reorganize the site. In the meantime, check out our Myspace page for tour dates, including a totally boss European tour with Dr. Dog this fall.

If you are hanging around in Chicago, Tornado Alley, or the American South in the next couple of weeks, come out and say hello!

SXSW (gaaaaah!), April date swap

March 16th, 2008

We slept hard last night after getting home from the airport at 2am. I think we’re still working through our feelings for that ridiculous event called South By Southwest. There were certainly some high points, like getting our minds blown by Spoon at a free show in their home town of Austin, or seeing Thurston Moore, J. Mascis and Michael Stipe all on the street in the same afternoon. But we also pushed our bodies harder than we have in a long time, and we’re glad to get some time to rest up.

Here’s a recording of “I Don’t Feel Young” that we did for Stereogum on Friday, seated in the air-conditioned back seat of a car. Also, Stereogum also did a feature on Jenn last week . . . woah here’s another thing! Texas Trivia!

And here’s a 3-song set that we played for Minnesota Public Radio, KCMP the Current on Saturday morning, bright and early with coffee coursing through my veins.

Splice Today did a joint interview between myself and Jesse from These United States, who just released a great new album.

On another topic, please note that our Baltimore and Lancaster CD Release shows in April have been swapped- Baltimore is now Thursday the 10th, and Lancaster is Friday the 11th.

Here’s a picture of John McCauly and his Deer Tick players, who will be doing those dates with us next month, at the Brooklyn Vegan Party on Wednesday night. Nice ’stache John!

We had a great time at the Creative Alliance on Saturday night. Many thanks to LO MOdA for a fantastic set, and to Natasha Tylea for curating the evening. Jeff the Baltimore Taper was in the house and recorded our set for everlasting posterity. That means that you can download it, listen to it, and pick apart every inconsistency in our playing. YES!

Also, we conducted a somewhat frenetic interview with Greg from the blog Aural States, which you can also check out while you’re dissecting our live performance.

Look for us if you happen to be in Austin for SXSW. We’ll be the ones who are completely overwhelmed by the spectacle of it all. If you’re not one of the truly privileged attendees, you can hear us over streaming radio from a couple of our performances (see SHOWS).
